Car Thefts and Crime in the Eastern Suburbs
Published 31 January 2024
You may have heard that over December and January there has been an increase in car thefts and break and enters in the Eastern Suburbs.
This issue is understandably concerning to many in our community. This week I met residents, local police and detectives from Strikeforce Sweetenham to discuss this issue and seek an update on the work police are doing to crack down on criminals and keep our community safe.
The most affected suburbs have been Bellevue Hill, Vaucluse, Dover Heights, and North Bondi, however this is also happening elsewhere. Our local police, combined with Strikeforce Sweetenham, have been very responsive to this issue. Additional patrols in the early hours of the morning have literally stopped some culprits in their tracks.
Strikeforce Sweetenham have provided the following top tips:
- Keep your doors and windows locked at night. Police say the young offenders are not looking for confrontation.
- If your car has an in-built tracker, check that it’s working, and you have downloaded the software. Alternatively, buy a tracking device and hide it discreetly inside your vehicle.
- Set up CCTV and sensor lights.
Police are keen to promote public awareness but do not want our community to feel unnecessarily alarmed. Crime spates come and go. The best protection is to be informed.
