Dear Lord Mayor,
'GLOBALISE THE INTIFADA' EVENT
I am writing to you to ask that you immediately cancel the ‘globalise the intifada’ event to be hosted at a City of Sydney-owned facility on the fifth of May.
Just over four months ago, NSW – and my local community – was shaken by Australia’s worst terrorist attack. This targeted attack on the Australian Jewish community occurred in an environment of deteriorating social cohesion and increasing antisemitism in our state.
In this context, the phrase ‘globalise the intifada’ cannot be dismissed as a benign or abstract political slogan. For many it is understood as a call that legitimises and encourages violence against Jewish people.
The NSW Parliament’s Committee on Law and Safety has found that the slogan, ‘globalise the intifada’ may be perceived to incite violence against Jewish people, and the NSW Government has indicated it will legislate to ban the chanting of the phrase.
It is therefore deeply concerning that the City of Sydney is permitting a council-owned facility to be used for a forum on why it is right to say, ‘globalise the intifada.’
This event deliberately undermines social cohesion and is contrary to the City’s own strategic aim of increasing community cohesion as outlined in the ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030–2050 vision.’
I do not accept that the City is powerless in this matter. The venue-hire agreements provide the City with discretion to cancel bookings where necessary, including where doing so serves the broader interests and responsibilities of the Council.
Promoting social cohesion and safeguarding community harmony are core civic responsibilities. Proceeding with this event risks being interpreted as tacit endorsement of a slogan that many in our community experience as threatening and deeply harmful.
I urge you to exercise leadership and act decisively to cancel this event.
Yours sincerely,
Kellie Sloane MP
